The influence of large corporations on environment, people and society is an issue of international concern. The international society is looking for methods of limitation and prevention of negative impact. One of such efficient methods for the last years became the series of international standards. Voluntary decision of large companies to comply with these standards is an acknowledgement of the fact that internal environmental and social policy may contribute to increased income and improved competition. At the same time the society gets a new instrument to control company’s operations.
Introduction of international standards, urged by intensive development of oil and gas and other industries, development and introduction of new technologies, expansion of operations, is directed towards unification of requirements to technology, products, aspects of human activities, in order to secure occupational health and safety and environmental protection. Economic growth is measured both in quantity and quality. Any environmental programs are considered as investment of human prosperity.
PetroKazakhstan promotes integrity, protection of environment, and health and safety excellence. Its foundation is the commitment to add long-term value to the economy, environment and society. Because of this philosophy, PK has developed strong policies, principles and commitment statements. Together, these drive specific expectations for continuous improvement and performance excellence.
In December 2009 PK business units PKOSI and PKTH have earned 14001 certification for Environmental management system and OHSAS 18001 certification for Safety Management System. The certification, following review by a third party (Moody International LLP) confirmed that PK HSE MS meets the requirements of the internationally recognized ISO 14001:2006 and OHSAS 18001:2007 Standards. The certification audit comprised the analysis of status of implementation of the company’s policies, objectives and business processes, taking into account compliance with legal requirements and significant environmental and occupational health and safety rules and standards.
At the end of 2009 PKOP has got certified to OHSAS18001:2007. The remaining business unit in PetroKazakhstan is PKKR that is currently doing preparatory works to start the implementation process.
PK HSE MS focuses on managing operations to protect the health and safety of employees, customers, contractors, the public and the environment, and improving energy and resource use.
Development and implementation of HSE MS in the company anticipates further active involvement in occupational health and safety and environmental protection activities, which comprise rational use of natural resources, provision of production-induced safety, prevention and efficient response to emergency situations.
